Norway sees itself as a global leader in ocean sustainability. Prime Minister Erna Solberg is patron for a UN-backed initiative to protect oceans in order to stave off the worst effects of climate change, and leads the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, an effort backed by 14 heads of state representing 40% of the world’s coastlines. Norway supports the global goal to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.
So why is the Prime Minister allowing mining companies to dump millions of tonnes of mine waste into protected Norwegian fjords?
Despite overwhelming opposition from local communities, fisherfolk, Sami Indigenous people, and the seafood and tourism sectors, Erna Solberg’s government is paving the way for two new mine projects owned by Nussir and Nordic Mining.
Time is running out. That’s why thousands of Norwegian youth have pledged to use non-violent direct action to take a stand against ocean dumping in Norway. This summer, they are camped in front of Nussir’s project ready to put their bodies on the line to demand PM Solberg protect the ocean at home.
Stand with them and thousands throughout Norway to demand PM Solberg be a real leader on ocean protection, stop the Nussir and Nordic Mining projects, and ban all ocean dumping in Norway.
Norway cannot lead ocean protection abroad while polluting its fjords at home! Here are some quotes from PM Solberg:
